The Story So Far

The Seventh Princess tells the story of Jennifer, a girl from our world who falls asleep on the bus to school one morning, and awakes in a horse-drawn carriage in an unknown country.

Jennifer is taken to a palace, where she meets Samson, a friendly but mysterious dwarf, and Rinaldo, a nobleman. In time she is taken to meet the elderly King Theobald, who seems to be too feeble-minded to rule. Surprisingly, Theobald adopts Jennifer as his daughter, making her a real princess.

Only later does Jennifer learn that the adoption is really the wicked scheme of Rinaldo. Prospero, a scholar, bookseller, and minor wizard, tells her that Rinaldo is in league with an evil sorceress named Swenhild, who is determined to corrupt and control the entire country of Eladeria.

Prospero helps Jennifer find a mysterious item called the Paladian Scroll, created by the good sorceress Pala in ancient times, which he thinks may help Jennifer deal with the danger ahead. At the next full moon, Jennifer is told, a huge bird-like creature called a harpy will come to carry her to Swenhild's lair.

The full moon arrives. At the climax of a terrible ceremony, the harpy carries Jennifer away into the night. But someone else comes along for the ride - Samson the dwarf, who has become the staunchest of Jennifer's friends.

Jennifer is delivered to Swenhild's stronghold overlooking the sea, and is imprisoned by the witch, but Samson gets away. Swenhild commences a spell that will transform Jennifer into a harpy, the fate that has already befallen not only the true princess, Julia, but also six previous adopted princesses who, like Jennifer, were kidnapped from our world.

But now Jennifer learns to use the power of the Paladian Scroll, a power that enables her to absorb Swenhild's witchcraft and turn it back against her. A spectacular battle of magic follows, in which neither can gain a decisive advantage.

Finally, though, as Swenhild is about to use her great physical strength, unaffected by the Scroll, to destroy Jennifer altogether, Samson arrives just in time to hurl a jewel-hilted knife into the witch's back. She tumbles from her high clifftop into the sea below, and vanishes beneath the waves. Jennifer, who has been badly wounded, falls unconscious to the floor.

The harpies are now released from Swenhild's spells, and are transformed back into human girls, fortunately with no memory of their enslavement. Even more surprisingly, Samson too is transformed - into Prince Corbold, the heir to the throne of Eladeria. Together, he and the princesses return to the palace, where Prospero is able to use his magical arts to heal Jennifer.

Thanks to the power of the Paladian Scroll, Jennifer is then able to oust the wicked Rinaldo and restore Theobald to the throne. A final spell from Prospero returns her to her own world, where she finds herself back on the bus to school.

The Demon in the Chain begins with Chapter 1: The Ruined City.
